Urn 188.05

188 cubic inches

There is a stillness to this urn that feels almost sacred. Wheel-thrown from fine porcelain, its form rises in a tall, elegant ovoid, unhurried in its upward reach, gently narrowing toward the lid with the quiet confidence of something that knows exactly what it is. This is a vessel of light and air, rendered entirely in white.

The surface is where this piece becomes truly extraordinary. Kathy Cady has applied a satin glaze fused with glass, and the result is a constellation of crystalline blooms scattered across the body like frost on a winter window, or sea foam caught mid-breath on pale sand. These macrocrystalline formations, each one unique and unrepeatable, drift across the porcelain in soft warm ivory against white, clustering and thinning in patterns that no human hand could plan or predict. The kiln made these decisions, and the kiln chose beautifully.

The flat disc lid continues the crystalline surface, seamlessly extending the visual language of the body. And rising from its center, a druzy spirit quartz crystal cluster reaches upward in jagged, luminous points, brilliant white and encrusted with tiny facets that catch the light like a frozen flame. It is bold where the vessel is serene, textured where the glaze is smooth, wild where the form is composed. The contrast is intentional and perfect.

Pure, luminous, and unmistakably handmade, this urn speaks a language of peace.
