Urn 115.04

115 cubic inches

This urn carries the quiet complexity of an autumn landscape rendered in clay and fire. Kathy Cady has achieved something remarkable here: a glaze surface that reads differently with every shift of light, pooling in warm sienna and burnt umber, then spreading outward into muted old gold. The overall effect is geological, almost planetary, as though the vessel itself holds the memory of the earth from which it came.

The form is deeply round and self-contained, a sphere that seems to exhale rather than strain, its generous belly tapering to a modest foot. There is an easeful confidence to this shape, unhurried and whole. The glaze breaks beautifully over the curves, collecting in amber rivulets along the lower body where the firing left its unpredictable mark, no two passages of color quite the same.

The fitted disc lid mirrors the vessel’s earthy warmth, its rim kissed in the same antique gold that traces the body below. Seated at the crown is a small raw crystal, pale and translucent, rising from a coiled clay setting like a seedling from soil. It is a tender detail, organically placed, choosing nature over formality.

This is a vessel that invites contemplation. It does not announce itself loudly but rewards those who look closely, offering new color and texture with every glance. A truly one-of-a-kind tribute, shaped by skilled hands and the unpredictable alchemy of the kiln.
