Mug – Agateware

1.66 cup capacity

There is something deeply calming about this mug, the way grey and white flow together in unhurried horizontal bands that wrap its generous, globe-like body from base to rim. Kathy Cady has worked here in agateware, an ancient technique in which differently colored porcelain clays are layered and wedged together before throwing, so that the wheel draws the colors into these soft, flowing striations that belong entirely to the clay itself rather than to any applied surface decoration.

The palette is composed and quietly sophisticated: cool dove grey threading through warm white in bands that vary subtly in width and intensity, never mechanical, always alive. The satin glaze finish lends a silky, touchable quality to the surface, neither too shiny nor too flat, exactly right for a piece meant to be held daily.

The handle is broad and comfortable, the form round and satisfying in both hands.

Part of Kathy Cady’s Agateware Collection, designed to companion bowls and dishes in the same grey and white palette. Each mug is individually thrown and one of a kind.

Perfect for a generous pour of morning coffee at the start of a slow day, or a deeply steeped cup of Earl Grey on a rainy afternoon.
